Tuesday Newsday: Breaking Wallinspired Blog News

I have a wallinspired blog announcement…drum roll… are you all sitting down? ūüôā

If you read my post last week¬†you know that I operate another blog in addition to this one as well as an Etsy shop and a bunch of other responsibilities. To tell the truth I’m tired. Dog tired.

This is how I feel

Multimedia Painting – Tired Girl from Amy22Mae

So I decided to make a few changes so I can do my best work and hold onto my sanity.

I will be offering chances for you to write here on the wallinspired blog as guest bloggers. All you have to do is tell me what you’re interested in talking about. The topics you can choose from are:

Parenthood

Fashion

Entrepreneurship

Education

Children

Interior Design

Art

I am looking to post on the blog 3 times a week instead of the schedule of 7 days a week I was shooting for before.

Anyone else feeling tired out there? Let’s commiserate ūüôā

Please leave a comment, too, if you’re interested in being a guest blogger!

Moms Monday: Sticking to a Budget

Image from: sharonbryant5

My mom has always been good about sticking to a budget. Not perfect but good. She was a single parent for several years and she’s been the breadwinner from the time I was 7 on. That is a huge responsibility.

As I mentioned last week, I’m not a mom. I actually still live at home, and although I am putting forth every effort to become completely self-sufficient, I have less experience sticking to a budget than maybe you might.

How does your family stick to a budget? Please share in the comment section below.

Moms Monday: I know you are but what am I?

First, I want to thank everyone for reading, commenting on, following, and supporting this blog! It really means a lot to me and it has boosted my confidence in my writing and ability to network with others. I have learned so much just by interacting with you all here.

Have you read the about page here on the blog? If you’ve ever wondered¬†who is the person writing this stuff? you can find some answers there, but I’ll also provide some answers here.

Me – Elise

You may have discovered this already, but I’m not a mom. Is that shocking? I hope not. I guess I should be flattered if you are shocked. You see I’m just shy of 20 and began writing this blog not because I think I’m some sort of parenting expert, but due to my collaboration with wallinspired.

Wallinspired has a great business going on Etsy and if you run a small, but growing business yourself, you can understand that managing every aspect of your business can be difficult, very difficult. So that’s where I come in. I also run an Etsy shop, Pieces of Elise’s (because my name is Elise – hi there!), and even though my shop is by no means flourishing just yet, I have learned a lot about marketing, social networking, and E-Commerce through the research I’ve done over the past 2 years.

I also write on Squidoo, Yahoo! Voices, and just started my own blog. Craig with wallinspired approached me to promote their shop through this blog, social networks, and elsewhere. If you’ve visited wallinspired‘s¬†shop on Etsy, you probably noticed that their vinyl wall decals are for kids, tweens, and teens. So I’ve really focused my efforts on this blog to reach you, the parents of the kids, tweens, and teens, as well as anyone else who is interested.

I’d like to think that writing for this blog has been going pretty well and that you all are enjoying your time spent here. Would you like to give some feedback?

Click here to take survey and you will be added to a drawing where 1 winner will be chosen. The winner has the choice of getting a free advertising spot on the blog (a 150 x 150 image linking to their blog or website on the right over there –>), ¬†a chance to write a guest blog post here on the wallinspired blog about a topic of their choice, or a free handmade item from my own Etsy shop Pieces of Elise’s. So please take the survey for a chance to win!!!

Tuesday Newsday: Could Your Child Save a Life?

Last year I took a CPR/ First Aid/ AED course and became a “professional rescuer”. Even though I got the training I sometimes wonder if an emergency situation occurred, would I know what to do?

I watched this heart-warming video of a six year old who saved her best friend based on what she learned from a Disney Channel show. To watch click the link below:

Hero Kid Saves Life with the Heimlich

Credit: RANDALL BENTON

I surely didn’t know how to do the Heimlich when I was a 6 year old. It is definitely apparent, though, that if Beanie had not stepped in, her friend Aniya could’ve lost her life.

So what safety training do your kids have under their belt? Have you shown them any educational videos on what to do if a friend is in Aniya’s situation? Who they should call for help?

If you know of any good resources for teaching children to be safe, please share them with the rest of us ūüôā

Moms Monday : Special Interview with Annabelle Petriella

This Monday we have a special treat. Annabelle Petriella from Stylish Furniture and Decor agreed to be interviewed for this Moms Monday post!

She is an entrepreneur and a mom, so I know you will enjoy reading about how she juggles it all.

Annabelle Petriella

How did you start your own business?

I worked as a high end residential interior designer in Washington, DC for 10 years and New York City for 2 years.  I was working long hours for a design firm in NYC when I got pregnant and decided to shift gears in my career.  I wanted to be able to work from home and make my own schedule once the baby came.  I also wanted to do something relating to my field
and experience as a designer.

Sourcing has always been one of my favorite parts of my job as a designer.¬†It’s so satisfying to find a fabulous piece that is just perfect for a¬†space I’m designing, or to discover something that I know I can use in¬†many different spaces. ¬†That is what inspired me to launch my retail¬†furniture site. ¬†My goal is to bring a designer-sourced selection of¬†furniture, accessories and lighting to my retail customers.

What challenges or obstacles did you face?

Balancing my baby’s needs and the demands of a new company was a challenge¬†I faced from the start. ¬†While I imagined “working from home” meant¬†working here and there around my baby’s schedule, the reality is much¬†different than the fantasy! ¬†I learned early on that I need to have¬†dedicated times to work on my company and times that I focus exclusively
on my son. Otherwise, both the work and my baby suffer.

How do you balance your work with family?

I work for about 2 hours in the morning during his two naps.  I consider that bonus time and am happy to get a few things checked off my list during those two naps.  Then, I work for 3-4 hours uninterrupted in the afternoon while a babysitter or a family member watches him.  I work at night after his bedtime and on the weekends while my husband has some
father-son time. ¬†What is the most liberating about being your own boss is¬†not working less – in fact, you’ll probably work much more! – but being¬†able to choose when (and where!) you work and when to spend time with your¬†family.

What advice do you have for other moms who want to be their own boss?

I have a few pieces of advice for other moms who are considering starting their own company.  First, choose something that you are passionate and excited about.  I love furniture and design, so I enjoy spending time working on my company.  Second, identify your weaknesses and seek the advice and support of others who can help you in those areas.  Third, once
you start your business, set a schedule so that you’re able to focus on¬†work during set times.

What’s your top pick for moms from Stylish Furniture and Decor?

My top pick for moms is our e-design package!  We recently launched our e-design division, Stylish Design Services(www.stylishdesignservices.com).  Using our unique e-design process, we create fantastic customized room designs for a fraction of the cost of an in-home interior designer.  We feature qualified and experienced professional Interior Designers from all over the country with unique and varying styles.  They create a beautiful custom design complete with a

Friday Faves – Spring Looks for Dads

This is my follow up post to my post last week on Friday Faves РSpring Looks for Moms

Yeah. Dad’s usually aren’t so into the fashion scene and spring style trends probably sound like a bunch of hoopla to men – but take a look at these cool picks for men. Hey – you won’t have to shop! All the links to these great items are provided so you can zoom right to the one that catches your eye. ūüôā

For the Quirky Dad

¬†I work with a very fun and ¬†quirky lawyer who just had a new baby boy. He wears bow ties to work with a plaid suit and suspenders. Oh and he gave his son the middle name “Stucky”. I made these picks with his taste in mind.

1. Check out this sweet New Dad and Baby Boy Set of 2 Tie Shirts from ChicCoutureBoutique

2. Nifty Sherlock Holmes Cufflinks from BeautySpot

3. 3 snazzy Vintage 1950s Bowties from vntagequeen

4. A playful Ecofriendly Dad Wooden Key Fob from Ireneagh

For the Dapper Dad

This is the kind of dad I have personal experience with. My dad wore dress shoes very often as I recall. He also wore rings and old-fashioned hats. He wore nice suits and ties, and I’m pretty sure he owned tie clips. My step-dad, also quite dapper, has a good collection of suits, ties, shoes, shirts… I’ll have to see if he has tie clips. He’s also a fan of rings and brief cases.

1. Cool engraved Boss Dude Tie Clip from ManoyMetal

2. Handsome Multi Stone Mens Ring from thesilverman

3.  Classic Rockport Mens Wing Tip Oxfords from RetroVintage123

4. Fashionable Briefcase in Dark Navy Leather from jennyndesign

For the Outdoorsman Dad

My older brother has become quite the outdoorsman of his own making (oops I misspelled it on the picture – but you get the point). Just the other day I watched him build a fire on the shore of a lake with branches and dry grasses. It certainly wasn’t a huge feat, but it was something our parents never taught him to do. I made this collection with him in mind.

1. Every man needs a good Flannel Shirt Checked Black/Green from BlackboardLabel

2. A tough pair of Vintage Herman Survivors Mens Boots in Oxblood from RabbitHouseVintage *

3. A casual Brown and Cream Plaid Cotton Fedora from rocksandsalt

4. A sturdy Vintage Oversized Caramel Leather Duffle Bag from claudedonohoshop

*RabbitHouseVintage¬† created a 10% off coupon just for you wallinspired readers. It’s wallinspired ¬† ūüôā

For the Chill Dad

This actually is also based on my brother (he’s not a dad but I’ve seen dads with this look). He’s into rock (bands like Coheed and Cambria, Avenged Sevenfold, and Sevendust) and I think the other side of his style comes from his love of music. He wears a lot of neutral colors all year round, which isn’t odd for a man (or a woman in my opinion – since I do the same thing). He wears a lot of tee shirts with a sort of Grunge look. He likes aviators (sunglasses) and the ring in the picture reminds me of his wedding ring.

1. A masculine For Him Bracelet Aluminum Wire and Waxed Cotton from Kosmika

2. Edgy My Moon My Man mens t shirt from blackbirdtees

3. Sleek Aviator Sunglasses Black Frames and Yellow Lenses from DontUWantMe

4. A rustic Copper Wood Grain Tree Bark Mens Band from tinahdee

Stay tuned for more look book features next Friday!

Thursday Food for Thought: Your Earliest Memory

Last week I had a discussion with my mom and brother about what our earliest memories were.

I remembered riding around the neighborhood with my brother in our red toy corvette. I also remembered an old lady that lived down the street from us in a green house. I could also picture that a park that we used to call “Green Hill” had a carousel. It doesn’t anymore. My mom told me, “you were about 2 when all those things happened”. I was surprised I could remember back that far.

What about you? What is your earliest memory? Please share!
