Moms Monday: I know you are but what am I?

First, I want to thank everyone for reading, commenting on, following, and supporting this blog! It really means a lot to me and it has boosted my confidence in my writing and ability to network with others. I have learned so much just by interacting with you all here.

Have you read the about page here on the blog? If you’ve ever wondered who is the person writing this stuff? you can find some answers there, but I’ll also provide some answers here.

Me – Elise

You may have discovered this already, but I’m not a mom. Is that shocking? I hope not. I guess I should be flattered if you are shocked. You see I’m just shy of 20 and began writing this blog not because I think I’m some sort of parenting expert, but due to my collaboration with wallinspired.

Wallinspired has a great business going on Etsy and if you run a small, but growing business yourself, you can understand that managing every aspect of your business can be difficult, very difficult. So that’s where I come in. I also run an Etsy shop, Pieces of Elise’s (because my name is Elise – hi there!), and even though my shop is by no means flourishing just yet, I have learned a lot about marketing, social networking, and E-Commerce through the research I’ve done over the past 2 years.

I also write on Squidoo, Yahoo! Voices, and just started my own blog. Craig with wallinspired approached me to promote their shop through this blog, social networks, and elsewhere. If you’ve visited wallinspired‘s shop on Etsy, you probably noticed that their vinyl wall decals are for kids, tweens, and teens. So I’ve really focused my efforts on this blog to reach you, the parents of the kids, tweens, and teens, as well as anyone else who is interested.

I’d like to think that writing for this blog has been going pretty well and that you all are enjoying your time spent here. Would you like to give some feedback?

Click here to take survey and you will be added to a drawing where 1 winner will be chosen. The winner has the choice of getting a free advertising spot on the blog (a 150 x 150 image linking to their blog or website on the right over there –>),  a chance to write a guest blog post here on the wallinspired blog about a topic of their choice, or a free handmade item from my own Etsy shop Pieces of Elise’s. So please take the survey for a chance to win!!!

Moms Monday : Special Interview with Annabelle Petriella

This Monday we have a special treat. Annabelle Petriella from Stylish Furniture and Decor agreed to be interviewed for this Moms Monday post!

She is an entrepreneur and a mom, so I know you will enjoy reading about how she juggles it all.

Annabelle Petriella

How did you start your own business?

I worked as a high end residential interior designer in Washington, DC for 10 years and New York City for 2 years.  I was working long hours for a design firm in NYC when I got pregnant and decided to shift gears in my career.  I wanted to be able to work from home and make my own schedule once the baby came.  I also wanted to do something relating to my field
and experience as a designer.

Sourcing has always been one of my favorite parts of my job as a designer. It’s so satisfying to find a fabulous piece that is just perfect for a space I’m designing, or to discover something that I know I can use in many different spaces.  That is what inspired me to launch my retail furniture site.  My goal is to bring a designer-sourced selection of furniture, accessories and lighting to my retail customers.

What challenges or obstacles did you face?

Balancing my baby’s needs and the demands of a new company was a challenge I faced from the start.  While I imagined “working from home” meant working here and there around my baby’s schedule, the reality is much different than the fantasy!  I learned early on that I need to have dedicated times to work on my company and times that I focus exclusively
on my son. Otherwise, both the work and my baby suffer.

How do you balance your work with family?

I work for about 2 hours in the morning during his two naps.  I consider that bonus time and am happy to get a few things checked off my list during those two naps.  Then, I work for 3-4 hours uninterrupted in the afternoon while a babysitter or a family member watches him.  I work at night after his bedtime and on the weekends while my husband has some
father-son time.  What is the most liberating about being your own boss is not working less – in fact, you’ll probably work much more! – but being able to choose when (and where!) you work and when to spend time with your family.

What advice do you have for other moms who want to be their own boss?

I have a few pieces of advice for other moms who are considering starting their own company.  First, choose something that you are passionate and excited about.  I love furniture and design, so I enjoy spending time working on my company.  Second, identify your weaknesses and seek the advice and support of others who can help you in those areas.  Third, once
you start your business, set a schedule so that you’re able to focus on work during set times.

What’s your top pick for moms from Stylish Furniture and Decor?

My top pick for moms is our e-design package!  We recently launched our e-design division, Stylish Design Services(www.stylishdesignservices.com).  Using our unique e-design process, we create fantastic customized room designs for a fraction of the cost of an in-home interior designer.  We feature qualified and experienced professional Interior Designers from all over the country with unique and varying styles.  They create a beautiful custom design complete with a

Are you a working mom or dad? If so what is your schedule?

Do you try to make time share a meal with your children? If so please share in the comment section how you make the time with whatever your work schedule is. You can also share your reasons if you don’t.

I found the article at the link below interesting. Facebook chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg says that she makes it known that she will leave work at 5:30 to eat dinner with her kids. It also shoes many reader comments. So take a look!

Moms Monday: Nursery Inspiration

This is a post from Kellie from Le Zoe Musings. She and her husband created this beautiful nursery for their daughter, Zoe. Isn’t it cute? 🙂

LE ZOE MUSINGS

I always knew I didn’t want Zoey to have a girly girl room. No barbie dolls or princess themes- can be cute but just not for us. I already had a vision for her nursery- white, simple, modern, and lots of diy projects from mommy + daddy. I wanted the nursery to have the reminiscence of a boutique. A baby retail boutique.

Daddy used this fabric to make her changing station cover, bedskirt, and bedsheets.

And he also made the decorative pillows and matching foot rest. We love daddy!

We added the extra hanging space here both for aesthetics and space saver. Her closet was getting overflowed!

The goal is to have her shop in her own room so she doesn’t feel the need to go elsewhere!

I love these small cubes to display her shoe collection.

Thursday Food for Thought – Where Are You Headed?

Hey everyone!

As we navigate life, we all have to step back from time to time and think about where we’re going. If you’re a parent that question takes on greater importance as you are responsible not just for own future, but for your family‘s as well.

Of course not everything is under your control. Even the best of plans do not always pan out. So with the unpredictability of life aside, where would you like to see yourself (and your family if you have one) in say 10 years?

College / Education

Do you see yourself having that degree that you’ve always wanted? Your doctorate in fill in the blank?

Or maybe you see your little ones doing well in the classroom, getting scholarships to good schools. Your son or daughter playing college sports?

If education is really important to you and your family, that is very commendable. By all means do your research, even if school doesn’t look like it’s in the immediate future, it pays to know what kind of institution you will be trusting for your education. Also where do you see this education taking you? What jobs will it offer? What is the availability and likelihood of being hired for said job?

For your children, too, it is important to do research with them and that way you can sleep at night, convinced that you didn’t rush into anything!

Have any school experiences you’d like to share? Or any goals? Please leave a comment!

Romance

Who doesn’t at one point or another in their lives want to find that special someone? Do you hope 10 years from now to be living happily ever after with the one you love?

Just like choosing a school or a profession – it’s good to not rush into things. Of course that is common sense, but sometimes romantic comedies (really most movies and TV shows in general) may lead their viewers to believe that true love happens immediately as soon as you lock eyes with that handsome man or that gorgeous girl.

It’s not true. Don’t believe the hype. If you really want to find a compatible partner, take your time. Don’t run up to the first attractive stranger you see and ask them to marry you! Get to know people – think about what you want in a partner, the qualities that matter most to you. Evaluate the prospective candidates – then make a move.

Being careful pays off in the end.

Do you agree with that advice? Do you have your own opinion? Don’t be shy – make a comment below!

Start a Family

Are you in the place in your life where you feel like you’re ready to be a mom or dad? Or maybe you have kids already, but want more. Is it a long-term goal – in 10 years you want to have kids?

Either way here are some things to consider: How are your finances? Can you support another mouth to feed, plus everything else kids need?

How busy are you? What adjustments would you have to make when you have to devote attention to your child’s needs?

How does your partner feel about having children? How would they feel about the possibility of more children?

How’s your relationship with the children you have already?

Do you have a stable relationship, and are you convinced that you will be raising this child with the support of the other parent? If you have no partner – see the point before Romance – unless you plan on an alternative route 🙂

Please share your opinions, tips, what have you – on starting a family!

Career

Are you in college hoping that down the road all those late nights studying instead of sleeping will actually lead to a well-paying, hopefully enjoyable job?

Or maybe you are ambitiously trying to start up your own business?

Well, whether you aspire to work for a good company, or become the company, here are some good things to think about:

Why do you think you would be well-suited to this career? Do you think you will be happy to do this type of work?

What steps have you already taken to start this career?

If starting your own business, why do you want to start this business? Flexibility? Creative expression? You hate your current boss?

Are you satisfied with your current career and want to share your success story? Or are you a entrepreneur who kindly wants to give newbies some tips? Please leave a comment!

Personal Growth

Maybe what’s important to you really boils down to the person that you are. In 10 years do you want to be a better communicator? Are you working on being more loving to your family? Or maybe you’re looking to boost your self-confidence?

Achieving your goals to improve your personality will translate into benefits in other areas of life.

So, how can you work on your personality? First, identify the trait you want to improve, enhance, or get rid of. Don’t overwhelm yourself, start small.

For instance, personally, I want to become less introverted. Making a conscious effort to think about others more than myself can really help me to start taking an interest in others, instead of hiding behind a rock.

Don’t expect to become a perfect person. It’s just not possible to transform ourselves into flawless creatures, but we can shoot for well-rounded.

I enjoyed writing this post and I hope you liked reading it. Share your comments below!

Hey everyone!

I hope you’re having a good start to the work week.

While browsing some articles online I found the article at the link below and I thought it would be helpful for new moms making a nursery for the little arrivals they’re expecting.

There are some great safety tips and tips for moms who may be working with a small space or budget. Check it out and let me know if it’s helpful to you.

Nursery Room Projects – Baby Tips.

Nursery from Expecting Mom

I made this collection thinking of an expecting mom with a nursery all set up for her little girl on the way.

She’s got the kids initial monogram name decal from wallinspired, a cute bermuda owls blanket from NewEnglandGifts, and a Chocolate plush (the dragon fly on the shelf)  from stephanimals, along with lots of other great goodies. It pays to be prepared!
